A good harness should have a "Y" front, so causes absolutely no restriction to the dogs legs which can cause damage to joints and muscles. The front of the harness should sit on the sternum and no higher, the sides should sit 2" behind the elbow and the back/top should not slip to or beyond T10 on the spine. Ask me I will show you.
It should fit well and it is useful if it has a D ring on the front as well as the back. The back ring can be used to indicate to your dog that this is his walk and he can go where ever he wants to sniff and explore and we will follow.
When you want to do some nice balanced loose lead walking attach a double ended lead to the front and the back. This will help the dog not to pull and to feel comfortable and balanced. This can then be reinforced with treats.
"Non-pull" harnesses are not advised.
Harnesses are safer and more humane as unlike collars the do not put pressure on the dogs delicate throat area and do not cause collapsed trachea issues. Trachea problems can be caused at any age by a dog pulling whilst being walked on a collar and lead. Click here for more info. The neck is also home to the thyroid gland, Lymph nodes, Mandibular gland, an artery and the oesophagus.
Pressure on the neck can cause:
eye problems
collapsed trachea
syringomyelia
sensitive throats
thyroid disorders
Obstructions to blood flow and neural pathways.
We recommned Balance Harnesses which are lightweight, easy to fit and do not get heavy when wet. These can be purchased from The Healthy Pet Store.
We recommend made to measure Perfect Fit Harness from Dog Games:

The Ultimate in Dog Walking Harness
Further information on the Perfect Fit Harness, it's design, and helpful videos can be found on our "More Info" and "Benefits" pages.
We recommend Tellington TTouch Harnesses and double ended leads.
A new nylon harness made in the UK with different points of attachment giving you a variety of choices in the way you attach the lead. Clipping one end of the lead to the front ring removes pressure from the dogs neck and helps the dog to move in balance. Great for dogs that pull or spin, or display lead frustration, this new harness can be used for ground exercises and regular walking. Two shaped fasteners either side of the neck, and two shaped fasteners either side of the barrel enable you to put the harness on your dog without having to put it on over his head or lift a leg. Used in conjunction with a double ended lead.
Please ask me to show you how these harnesses and leads can be used to aid you in the training of your dog.
